SYNOPSIS In the language of the indigenous Selk’nam people of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego “Charkpen” literally means “hoping for something”. For us it simply means HOPE. “Charkpen” is a short documentary film shot within Argentina and Chile with the minimum materials and with a prominently photographic spirit but using real images. Corruption, wars, terrorism, environmental destruction, chaos. This is the reality of the “first world”. On the other hand, the indigenous villages and the legendary figures of the “gauchos” (South American cowboys) live directly in contact with nature, fighting to maintain their languages, customs and their way of life. Both of these groups act as critical observers of the harsh reality and their penetrating gaze threatens all of the rest of us to follow their example and to become aware as soon as possible in order to change things. Through the evocative images of cities and landscapes, the document tries to symbolise this journey from today’s “chaos” to this old-new way of life.
